Hi, I’m Jake.

I’ve been preparing for a career in communications since I was 12, when I became a Kid Reporter for Sports Illustrated Kids. I’ve since been part of the Disney College Program and even set a Guinness World Record.

While I’m just beginning my career, I’m proud of my track record for setting goals and accomplishing them.

Here are some examples:

Like most kids, I dreamed of one day setting a Guinness World Record. On June 16, 2022, I set a record by fielding 10 ground balls in one minute… then I fielded 11, breaking my own record. I wrote about my path to becoming a Guinness World Record holder for The Dallas Morning News.

I enjoyed reading Sports Illustrated Kids and wondered what it would be like to write for the magazine and website. Then I found out they had a Kid Reporter program. I was accepted on my first try. I created content for four years, covering events like the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Final Fours and interviewing athletes like Clayton Kershaw, Tim Tebow and Dawn Staley.

When I discovered that Disney offered a program for college students, I applied right away. I spent six months working and learning at Walt Disney World. (This included the fall semester of my sophomore year, which is why I’m a December graduate.)

A Summer Working in Baseball

During the summer of 2024, I got a taste of baseball life by interning for the Sherman Shadowcats, a collegiate summer league team, and by working as an All-Star Experience Member during MLB All-Star Week. I wrote about my experience on LinkedIn.

MOJO Ad

When I returned to college, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in strategic communication. I transferred to the University of Missouri to join one of the top programs in the country and be part of MOJO Ad, Mizzou’s prestigious, student-run agency. As one of 33 students selected, I led the writing of my team’s plan book for a Bath & Body Works campaign. The plan book was designed by Kylyn Maxwell, and we ultimately pitched the campaign to the company’s Chief Marketing Officer. Click here to view the plan book.

Graduation Speaker

I was honored to be selected as the student graduation speaker and delivered the “Thoughts of the Class.”

Serial Entrepreneur

When the pandemic hit and I knew I would have plenty of free time, I wanted a productive way to spend it. So I sold over 600 humorous buttons online while maintaining a five-star shop rating. I also started two other businesses, both receiving funding from the University of Missouri’s Entrepreneurship Alliance.

My Academic Journey

From kindergarten through eighth grade, I attended a school for students with learning differences. By high school, I was confident that I could keep up with my “mainstream” peers so I switched schools. I soon earned my way onto the honor roll and, in college, I’ve made the dean’s list every semester.

Becoming a Runner

I decided earlier this year to add running to my fitness routine, and I aimed to eventually run a half marathon. I’ve done three in the past seven months.

More Work

As part of the University of Missouri’s Public Relations Student Society of America, I created a playbook to help offensive lineman Talan Chandler capitalize on his name, image and likeness. Click here to view the playbook.
After Joey Chestnut got banned from the Fourth of July Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, I saw an opportunity to get some publicity for the Sherman Shadowcats by inviting him to our July Fourth baseball game. Click here to read the press release.
